CDV portrait of Olive Oatman, with Powelson's Rochester, NY imprint on verso. Oatman (1837-1903) was captured by the Yavapai in Arizona at the age of 13 and was then sold to the Mojave. She was tattooed on her chin, marking her as a slave. Oatman was ransomed at Fort Yuma in 1856, and thereafter lived the rest of her life in California and New York.
