Promoted to command of the 11 Corps Howard bore the brunt of Jackson's devastating flank attack at Chancellorsville. At Gettysburg Howard took over after Reynolds was killed and is credited for rallying the 1st Corps and selecting Cemetery Hill as the fall back position.
