Studer, Jacob H. New York: Jacob Studer & Co., 1881 (rev. ed.), illustrated by Theodore Jasper. Folio, orginial brown leather binding, tooling and gilt on cover and spine, gilt on all page edges, 182pp with 119 color plates, all with tissue guards. Although chromolithography had been developed three decades earlier, it was not popularly used because it was a complex process that did not yield results as pleasing as hand-coloring. As the technique improved, works such as Studer's became feasible. Originally issued from 1874 to 1878 in two volumes, this revised edition was issued in one, and reissued many times, so popular was it in its day. The colors in this volume remain bright and clean.
Condition: Slight wear to outer hinges, inner rear separated, minor bumping of corners and spine ends, but overall a tight copy with very little foxing or toning, pages bound tightly.
