About this item

Portrait an unidentified naval officer with the junior rank of Master (in between Midshipman and Lieutenant) indicated by plain shoulder straps and cuff button configuration under the 1852 regulations. The rather corpulent officer wears a typical undress coat and bears a striking resemblance to Civil War notable Admiral Louis M. Goldsborough, however he is not. By the time the ambrotype had replaced the daguerreotype, Goldsborough career was already well advanced having been promoted to Commander in 1841, Captain in 1855 and Rear-Admiral in 1862.

Condition: Plate G, with numerous hairline abrasions with average clarity; housed in partial composition case.
