Lot includes portrait and frame. A painted photograph of John Josey (1831-1866) who became colonel of the 15th Arkansas in December 1862. Josey was wounded and captured at St. Francis River, Arkansas on February 14,1864 and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner at Camp Chase, Ohio. He died prematurely in Osceola, Florida (yellow fever?) in October 1866 and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Memphis. Since Josey was a POW and then died fairly soon after the war we suspect this framed colored photo is somehow related to his funeral obsequies. Portrait 10 x 12 in., matted and framed, 15.25 x 17.5 in.
