Charles W. Keith first enlisted on November 24, 1861 as a private, mustering into Co. F of the New York 101st Infantry, but he was transferred out on December 24, 1862. Keith was then transferred into Co. F of the New York 37th Infantry. He was listed as a POW at Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863, and was paroled on May 14 at City Point, Virginia. He was transferred to Washington, D.C. on May 20 and arrested on May 26, 1863 at Camp Parole, Virginia. HDS indicates that Keith was transferred out on May 29, 1863. On the same day, Keith then enlisted as a Private and was transferred into Co. I of the 40th New York Infantry, also known as the Mozart Regiment. He re-enlisted again on December 29, 1863. Keith was wounded in action on June 17, 1864 and died a day later at Petersburg, Virginia.
