CDV of 2nd US Infanty BBG Sidney Burbank, Brevet for Gallantry at Gettysburg
Lot # 291 - CDV of 2nd US Infanty BBG Sidney Burbank, Brevet for Gallantry at Gettysburg
Sidney Burbank (1807-1882). Born in Lexington, MA, Burbank was the son of a Lt. Col. and attended USMA, graduating in 1829. He was assigned to the 1st Infantry, and fought in some battles with the Seminoles. He then worked to establish frontier forts, including Eagle Pass, TX. When war broke out with the Confederacy, Burbank was promoted to Lt. Col. of the US 13th Infy. The in September 1862, he was commissioned into F&S of the 2nd Infy. He served the first part of the war with the Army of the Potomac, and was engaged in most of those Eastern Theater battles. By winter 1863-63, his health and eyesight were failing, so he was transferred to recruitment duty in Columbus, OH and northern KY, then stationed at  Newport Barracks. He received a brevet BG for service at Gettysburg (in the Wheatfield) to date from 3.13.65. He retired in May 1870 after 40 years of service, and lived the remainder of his life in Newport, KY. He died in 1882 and is buried in Spring Grove Cemetery (Cincinnati, OH). Backmark of S.M. Fassett's, Chicago gallery.

Burbank's son, Sullivan Wayne Burbank, also served in the war. He enlisted in March 1861 into the US 2nd Cav. In June he was transferred into the 14th Infy. He was wounded 5 May 1864 in the Wilderness campaign, and died of his wounds a month later.
