Oval grenade body measures nominally 5" long by 2.5" in width at the widest point. Weighs nominally 2.8 pounds. Non-dug. Includes original plunger and apparently cardboard fins on wooden tail. One fin ink stamped "PATENTED AUG 20, 1861" along the edge with the stamp not completely on the fin and some of the upper part of the printing missing. A nice displaying example of a Ketchum grenade from the Civil War period.
Condition:
Very good. Cast body with a mostly smooth chocolate brown patina with patches of scattered surface oxidation and some minor surface rust that should clean. Plunger base with moderate amounts of surface rust and roughness. Wood tail with some wear, cardboard fins with wear, some deformation and apparent old mottled discoloration from mildew.
