5th Model Burnside Carbine

.54 caliber. 21" barrel. SN: 8897. Blued and color casehardened finish, smooth walnut stock and forend. Standard Burnside markings, mismatched serial number "9930" on the breech block. Obverse butt stock crudely carved in three lines "SAMULL / BALLAD / 10 IND CAV". Weak outline of cartouche on reverse wrist. Retains leaf rear sight and saddle bar with ring.

A search of civilwardata.com shows that a Samuel Ballard from Bartholomew County, Indiana served in L company of the 10th Indiana Cavalry, mustering in on January 13, 1864 and mustering out August 31, 1865 in Vicksburg, MS.

Condition:

Good. Retains traces of blue on the barrel in protected areas with the balance a mostly mottled brown and gray patina with scattered surface oxidation and some pitting. Receiver with a mottled and oxidized brown over gray patina and no finish  remaining. Markings in metal remain mostly legible, weaker in wood. Action functional, bore with moderate pitting and strong rifling. Stock with moderate wear and numerous bumps, dings and mars, showing some chipped loss around the the upper tang and some gapping at the receiver joint.
