Ames Eagle Pommel Militia Officers Sword

31.125" straight spear point blade. 1" wide at ricasso with narrow 11.5" central fuller. overall length 37.125". Blade etched with flowing foliate patterns with a panoply of arms on the obverse and a spread-winged eagle on the reverse. Obverse ricasso etches in three lines: "Ames Mfg Co / Chicopee / Mass". 6" long brass hilt with 5.5" wide gilt brass guard cast in the form of a spread-winged eagle that overlaps the ricassso on the the front. Flat quillons with shell motif, upper quillon replaced and a two section gilt brass chain suspended from the lower quillon and pommel cap as a guard. Gilt brass pommel cap cast in the form of an eagle, holing the ring for the guard chain in its beak. Silver-plated hexagonal grip engraved with Arabesque foliate scrolls and floral motifs with the pairs of the Shield of Columbia as the central panel on on each side. Gilt sheet brass scabbard with dual ring mounts at upper mount and a single ring at the center mount. Reverse of throat stamped with three line Ames address mark. Mounts of gilt cast brass with the Shield of Columbia on the upper mount, a wreathed central mount and a nicely embellished drag.

 

Condition:

Very good. Blade cleaned leaving the etching weak and somewhat difficult to discern. Guard with some traces of gilt finish, grip with some moderate dings and dents and retaining traces of silver. Upper quillon on guard is a cast replacement that dose not appear to be made of metal, possibly cast from an epoxy resin with a discernible line or crack between the metal guard and the quillon. Scabbard retains some polish and traces of gilt with numerous scattered dings and dents.
