CDV of Major Frederick M. Edgell, 1st NHLA & 1st NHHA,

view as 1st Lieutenant by D.O. Furnald, Manchester, ink signed, "Yours truly/F.M. Edgell/Capt 1st NH Battery." Edgell joined in August 1861 as battery 1st Lieutenant and was promoted Captain in March 1863 before Gettysburg. The battery was successively attached to the 1st Corps, the Artillery Reserve and the 3rd Corps, Army of the Potomac. At Gettysburg, Edgell commanded the battery which formed part of the 3rd Volunteer Brigade positioned on Cemetery Hill from late afternoon of July 2nd. The battery/brigade was engaged, but Edgell did not submit an after-action report. In November 1864 he joined the 1st New Hampshire Heavy Artillery as Major when the former 1st NHLA was attached as Company M and mustered out in June 1865 after garrison duty in the Washington defenses.
