Engraved Remington Elliot "Old Model" Army Revolver w/ Display Case

.44 Caliber. 8" octagonal barrel. SN: 6699. Blued finish, brass triggerguard, smooth two-piece walnut grips. Standard two-line Remington barrel address with Elliot's 1861 patent date. Matching serial numbers on grip frame under left grip and on rear of cylinder with barrel serial number illegible. German silver cone front sight, loading lever web of Elliot's design, allowing removal of the cylinder arbor pin without lowering the lever. Lever without later Remington modification of a filister head screw to prevent the pin from moving under recoil. Revolver with sub-inspection marks on barrel, cylinder and triggerguard and a weak cartouche on the left grip. Revolver with contemporary foliate scroll engraving on the frame, cylinder and much of the barrel. Backstrap with period-style engraved presentation that reads in two lines: "Presented to General D. M. Gregg by officers of / 2nd Cav Div Army of the Potomac 1863". The inscription certainly appears period and correct, but the modern engraved decorations certainly detract and bring the inscription into question. However, presentations on US military contract arms are certainly uncommon. Revolver is contained in a glass lidded wood display box with an information card and reproduction image of General Gregg.

Condition:

Good. Retains no finish with a moderately oxidized gray patina with freckled discoloration and some pinpricking. Metal cleaned in the past, softening the corners of the octagonal barrel. Mechanically functional, good bore with moderate pitting. Heavily pitted chambers. Right wing of cylinder arbor pin broken. Grips with moderate wear, dings and mars. Case very good.
