Etched Panel 4.75" Colt Model 1878 Frontier Six Shooter

.44-40. 4.75" barrel. SN: 12897 (mfg. ca1884). Blued finish, fire blued small parts, checkered Rampant Colt logo hard rubber grips. One-line barrel address which is uncommon on 4.75" guns that usually received a two-line address. This may indicate that this barrel was shortened from 5.5" or 7.5", although the muzzle is properly crowned, the front sight blade is perfect set, with traces of factory polish marks on either side and the gun shows no obvious signs of any such work. Left side of barrel acid etched "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER". Barrel marked "44" under cylinder pin head. Lanyard ring in butt. The Colt Model 1878 was the first entry by Colt into the large frame, large caliber double action revolver market and despite modest success did not ever achieve the market penetration of the more popular Single Action Army revolver. Some 18,819 Model 1878 revolvers were produced by Colt in .44-40 of which 2,928 were blue with 4.75" barrels which was the most fourth most popular variant within that caliber.

Condition:

Very good. Retains some strong traces of blue mixed with a smooth plum brown patina and some scattered surface oxidation. Clear markings throughout, mechanically functional, fine bore. Grips about fine with some light wear, solid and free of breaks.
