.44-40. 7.5" barrel. SN: 19790 (mfg. ca1887). Nickel finish, fire blued small parts, smooth Mother of Pearl grips. Standard one-line barrel address, left side of barrel acid etched "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER". Barrel marked "44" forward of cylinder pin head and left front web of triggerguard stamped "44 CAL". Lanyard ring in butt. The Colt Model 1878 was the first entry by Colt into the large frame, large caliber double action revolver market and despite modest success did not ever achieve the market penetration of the more popular Single Action Army revolver. Some 18,819 Model 1878 revolvers were produced by Colt in .44-40 of which 3,007 were nickel with 7.5" barrels which was the most third most popular variant within that caliber.
Condition:
Good. Retains some nickel finish with flaked loss and scattered oxidation. Etched worn and only panel partially legible. Metal with some scattered impact marks but retaining clear roll marks and stampings. Mechanically functional, very good bore, grips with some wear and chipping along the lower edge. Grips fit well. Loading gate does not match the assembly number under the grips.
