Ornate PA-KY Long Rifle Signed "P.H."

.40 caliber. 41" barrel length. SN: NSN. Pennsylvania-Kentucky style long rifle with flintlock action and fixed notch and blade sights. 7-rifled octagonal barrel has a browned metal finish with brass and other metal fixtures to stock. Solid fiddleback maple stock has a straight grip and cheek rest  with floral and scroll carvings to left side of butt. Metal fixtures on stock include a fish to left side, seven moons in varying sizes, and other oblong shaped pieces overall. Patchbox is triple pierced brass featuring fine scroll engravings to patch lid. Buttplate, serpentine trigger guard, and sidelock are also made of brass and feature scroll engravings. Barrel is secured to stock using four key pins to to both sides of stock. There are six metal shield covers over first three key pins on both sides. Muzzle of barrel features some fret engravings, and the number "40" to left side. Item is signed "P.H." or "T.H." with what could be a highly stylized "L" monogram in between. Item is without flint and action is non-functional. Includes ram rod and oxidized tool found in patchbox.

This item appears to have been signed either "P.H." or "T.H." to top of barrel. There is a fancy monogram-type symbol in between that could be a highly stylized "L" or just a design to fill the gap between the two legible letters. If it is in fact "P.L.H." it could have been made by a Pennsylvania gunmaker known as P. L. Hain. There is little to no information on Hain except that he was from Pennsylvania and operated sometime during the early to mid-era of long rifles.

Fair. Bore appears dark. Item has losses to metal finish overall, and a grey brown patina developing overall. Wood stock has a 9" crack extending from front of lockplate on right side. Wood stock has darkened some and has light scratches scattered overall. Metal key shields have losses to finish. There is slight oxidation and discoloring to brass pieces.
