Russom & Co. Flintlock Long Rifle

.45 caliber. 45" octagonal barrel length. SN: NSN. Pennsylvania-Kentucky style long rifle with flintlock action and fixed notch and blade sights. 9-rifled octagonal barrel has a browned metal finish and stock has several brass fixtures. Solid fiddleback maple stock has a plain straight grip and cheek rest to left side. Brass fixtures include a brass buttplate, serpentine style trigger guard, and a medallion fitted to left side of lock. Item also features an unmarked pierced patchbox with a push button release located on toe of buttplate. Right side is marked "RUSSOM & CO." and has some floral engravings to lockplate and cock lever. Stock is secured to barrel with four key pins. Action is functional. Inside patchbox was an old strip of paper with the name "J. M. Caswell?" written on it.

Little is known about Russom & Co. gunsmiths except that they produced guns or locks during the early to mid era. There was an old strip of paper inside of patchbox with the name "J.M. Caswell?" written on it, possibly indicating that the lock was made by Russom & Co. but the gun was manufactured by John M. Caswell. Both John and his father, Thomas, were prominent gunmakers located in the Albany, New York area, and operated several shops from the early 1800's to 1836.

Fair to good. Bore appears dark. Browned finish has turned mostly to a deep brown-plum patina and has scratches overall, scattered pitting. Wood stock has darkened overall except to areas of forearm and wrist where shooter was holding rifle. Brass fixtures have some oxidation. There is a 1"-2" crack extending from front of lockplate. Stock has some small losses and light scratches overall. Oxidation to frizzen and pan. Wood to metal fit has some space in front of frizzen and pan.
