Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor Rifle

.45-70, 32.625" barrel, S/N 269646 (mfg. ca1885). Blued finish, color case hardened breech block, smooth straight-gripped walnut stock. Breech block marked  US / MODEL / 1873. Lock marked with {Spread-Winged Eagle} and US / SPRINGFIELD. Barrel with V / P / {Eagle Head} / P proofs. Low arch breech, two-piece triggerguard, grooved trigger with checkered tip, solid buttplate, 3-click tumbler. 1879 pattern rear sight, musket type front sight that serves as lug for angular bayonet. Swelled shank slotted-head cleaning rod with single retention groove. Stock with long comb and short, thick wrist, showing a clear SWP/1884 cartouche on the counterpane and {Circle-P} firing proof behind the triggerguard. Retains both sling swivels and stacking swivel.

Condition:

Very Good+. Retains some strong thinned blue mixed with plum patina on the barrel with clear markings. Breech block with some nice traces of case color. Mechanically functional, very good bore is mostly bright but lightly frosted nearer the muzzle. Stock fairly crisp with some scattered bumps, dings and mars.
