U.S. Model 1863 Type I Rifle Musket by Springfield with Bayonet
.58 caliber. 40" barrel secured by three rounded clamping bands. no S/N. Bright finish, walnut stock. Standard Springfield lock markings, dated "1863" at tail, breech dated "1863" as well with typical "V/P/{Eagle Head}" proof marks. Counterpane with legible script "ESA" final inspection cartouche, with a weaker, less legible sub-inspector's cartouche. Retains correct 1861 pattern rear sight, front sight-bayonet lug, both sling swivels and a full-length straight-shank tulip head ramrod Includes a correct US marked Model 1855 Socket Bayonet.
Condition:
Very good. Metal lightly cleaned and toning down with a mottled and oxidized pewter patina, bands with a darker smoky gray appearance and some pitting. Lock functional, bore dirty but retaining strong rifling. Stock lightly sanded leaving the edges soft and cartouches weak. Bayonet very good as well.
