US Model 1879 Trapdoor Carbine by Springfield

.45-70, 22" barrel, S/N 175695* (mfg. ca1881). Blued finish, color case hardened breech block, smooth straight-gripped walnut stock. Breech block marked US / MODEL / 1873, lock marked with {Spread-Winged Eagle} and US / SPRINGFIELD / 1873. Barrel with V / P / {Eagle Head} / P proofs. Low arch breech, two-piece triggerguard, smooth trigger, 3-click tumbler, trapdoor buttplate without 3-piece cleaning rod or headless case extractor inside. 1879 pattern "C" marked carbine rear sight, pinned front sight blade, sling bar and ring. Stock with legible SWP/1881 cartouche counterpane and with weak {Circle-P} firing proof behind the triggerguard.

Condition:

Very good. Retains traces of of blue with a mostly smoothly oxidized plum patina with some scattered surface roughness. Markings remain clear and legible. Mechanically functional, good bore is with scattered oxidation, some light pitting and a lightly pitted ring near the muzzle. Stock with moderate wear, showing scattered bumps, dings and mars and some minor chipping around the lock mortise and saddle bar plate.
