US Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Rifle
.45-70, 32.625" barrel, S/N 24355 (mfg. ca1874). Blued finish, color case hardened breech block, smooth straight-gripped walnut stock. Early style breech block markings of MODEL / 1873 / {Eagle Head} / {Crossed Arrows}. Lock marked with {Spread-winged Eagle} and US / SPRINGFIELD / 1873. Barrel with V / P / {Eagle Head} / P proofs, suggesting a replacement barrel as guns in this serial number range did not receive barrel proofs. High arch breech, narrow receiver, two-piece triggerguard, grooved trigger, solid buttplate, 3-click tumbler. 1873 pattern rear sight, musket type front sight that serves as lug for angular bayonet. Swelled shank slotted-head cleaning rod with single retention groove. Later pattern replacement stock with long comb and short, thick wrist, showing traces of a cartouche on the counterpane and the firing proof P behind the triggerguard. Retains both sling swivels and stacking swivel. Includes a leather sling in the style of the M1887 sling, but of more recent production.

Condition:
Good. Retains some traces of blue on the barrel mixed with a moderately oxidized plum brown patina and showing some scattered light pitting and minor surface roughness. Clear marks in metal, weak in wood. Mechanically functional, good bore with strong rifling is moderately oxidized with some scattered light pitting. Stock with scattered bumps, dings and mars with some tiny chips around the breech plug tang and the breech block release.
